Tinubu Re-introduces History as a Subject in Schools: A Step Towards Reviving National Identity

In a significant move aimed at reconnecting the younger generation with their roots, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the reintroduction of Nigerian History as a subject in basic education. This directive, announced by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, marks a pivotal shift in the nation’s educational curriculum.

History was removed from Nigeria’s education curriculum during the 2009/2010 academic session under the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. The absence of this subject has left a gap in the knowledge of many young Nigerians, who are now disconnected from their rich cultural and historical heritage.

Speaking on Channels Television’s End-of-Year Special Review Show, Minister Alausa emphasized the importance of this directive. He stated, “What has been missing in the past is Nigerian history. We now have people who are 30 years old, totally disconnected from our history. It doesn’t happen in any part of the world.”

The reintroduction of Nigerian History into the curriculum will take effect this year. Students in primary schools, junior secondary schools, and senior secondary schools will study the subject as part of their course load. This initiative aims to foster a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s past, instill a sense of national pride, and ensure that future generations are well-informed about their country’s history.
