President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Tuesday, October 14, 20252.
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, was nominated following the unanimous approval of the National Council of State on October 9. He is set to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his tenure earlier this month.
President Tinubu emphasized that the nomination aligns with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates Senate confirmation for such appointments. The Senate has referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for legislative consideration.
In addition to Amupitan’s nomination, Tinubu also sought Senate approval for other key appointments, including Mrs. Ayo Omidiran as Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission and 28 individuals as Federal Commissioners.
