The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday the arrest of a lawmaker accused of assaulting a cab driver in Abuja. Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Abuja Command, confirmed the arrest of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh.
According to the statement, the cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, reported the incident to the police. Preliminary investigations reveal that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a disagreement arose over the method of delivery. During the exchange, Abuwatseya was reportedly assaulted.
The statement also highlighted concern over Ikwechegh’s alleged disregard for police authority. After allegedly slapping the driver, Ikwechegh reportedly responded dismissively, saying, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.”
Currently, Ikwechegh is at the Maitama Police Station, where he is undergoing questioning. FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to an impartial inquiry and assurance that appropriate legal action will follow upon its conclusion.
