The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to celebrate its 55th convocation ceremony with a week-long event starting on January 10, 2025. The ceremony will see the graduation of 16,409 students and the conferment of honorary degrees on notable individuals, including Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The festivities will kick off with a Juma’at service at the institution’s Central Mosque and conclude on January 17. Former Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola will chair the occasion, and Dr. Tayo Aduloju, CEO of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), will deliver the convocation lecture titled “Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation” at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium.
UNILAG will confer honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc) degrees on three distinguished individuals for their remarkable contributions to academia, scholarship, and societal development: Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Fola Adeola (Co-Founder of Guaranty Trust Bank), and Kolawole Adesina (Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group).
The convocation will also feature the award of first degrees, diplomas, certificates, and prizes to graduates from various faculties, including Arts, Education, Environmental Sciences, Science, and Social Sciences. The conferment of degrees will take place on January 14 and 15, with 9,684 students receiving first degrees and diplomas, and 6,659 being awarded postgraduate degrees. Additionally, 66 students will graduate from the UNILAG Business School.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, highlighted the impressive academic achievements of the graduates, with 561 first-class degrees and distinctions, 3,916 second-class upper degrees, and 763 second-class lower degrees. The ceremony promises to be a memorable celebration of academic excellence and societal contributions.
