Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has officially reopened the Independence Bridge in Lagos after weeks of partial closure due to structural concerns. The bridge, a vital link between the Lagos Island and Mainland, had been under inspection and emergency rehabilitation following reports of visible structural defects. Its reopening has brought relief to commuters and eased traffic congestion in one of Nigeria’s busiest cities.
Umahi, during a visit to the site, assured Lagos residents that while the current work ensures the bridge is safe for use, a more permanent reconstruction plan is underway. He emphasized that the Federal Government is committed to maintaining infrastructure safety and is fast-tracking processes to begin comprehensive repairs that will extend the lifespan of the bridge.
The minister also used the occasion to call for greater compliance with road usage regulations, citing the impact of overloaded trucks and poor maintenance practices on the deterioration of critical infrastructure. He reiterated the government’s resolve to enforce existing regulations to protect public assets.
Residents and transport unions welcomed the reopening but urged the government to stick to its promise of a long-term solution. Many expressed hope that future repairs would not only be timely but also include structural upgrades that reflect the demands of modern urban traffic in Lagos.
