UK, Nigeria Left Out as US Updates Visa Waiver Program.

The United States has released its updated list of countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), with notable exclusions including the United Kingdom and Nigeria. The VWP allows citizens of approved countries to travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. While the program aims to facilitate easier travel, the latest update has sparked discussions about the criteria for selection and why some major countries remain excluded.

One significant addition to the VWP this year is Romania, making it the 43rd country to join the program. Romanian citizens will soon be able to enter the U.S. visa-free starting from March 31, 2025. This inclusion reflects Romania’s improved security measures and compliance with U.S. immigration requirements. However, despite Romania’s acceptance, other European nations like the UK remain outside the program, raising questions about eligibility criteria.

The United Kingdom’s absence from the VWP is particularly surprising to many. While some British citizens with the right of permanent abode in the UK may still qualify under specific conditions, many others are required to apply for a visa. The U.S. has not provided a clear reason for the UK’s continued exclusion, but factors such as security policies and immigration agreements may play a role.

For Nigeria and other African nations, the exclusion means that travelers must continue applying for U.S. visas, a process that can be costly and time-consuming. The U.S. has historically required higher security and immigration standards for countries to qualify for the VWP. With visa refusal rates and passport security being major determining factors, many African countries, including Nigeria, do not currently meet the required benchmarks.

The Visa Waiver Program remains an exclusive arrangement for countries that align with U.S. security protocols and immigration standards. While Nigeria and the UK remain outside the list, other nations continue to push for inclusion. Until eligibility requirements are met, travelers from excluded countries will have to go through the traditional visa application process to visit the United States.
