Lawmakers cited worsening attacks and rising threats across Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger states, stressing that communities remain vulnerable despite ongoing military and police operations. The Senate argued that empowering law-abiding citizens with firearms could serve as a deterrent against banditry, kidnappings, and terrorist activities.
The motion has sparked debate nationwide, with supporters insisting that self-defense is a constitutional right, while critics warn of the risks of proliferation and misuse of weapons.
