The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially approved the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a grassroots football initiative aimed at nurturing young talent across the country.
The endorsement, backed by the Senate Committee on Sports Development, paves the way for the tournament to become an annual national event. Organized by the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, the competition honors the late Nigerian football legend Sam Okwaraji, who tragically collapsed and died during a 1989 World Cup qualifier against Angola.
In a statement signed by Ruth David, Acting Director of Competitions, the NFF emphasized that the tournament aligns with its mission to foster youth football development. The federation also encouraged strict compliance with FIFA regulations, ensuring a fair and well-structured event.
Okwaraji, educated in Rome, was known for his selfless dedication to Nigerian football, prioritizing his national team duties over personal ambition. His legacy remains a powerful symbol of patriotism and sportsmanship among Nigerian youth.
