Lagos State Launches “Cash for Trash” Drive to Boost Recycling and Cleanliness

The Lagos State Government has rolled out a revitalized “Cash for Trash” initiative, encouraging residents to convert household waste into cash as part of its broader environmental sustainability campaign. The program, managed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), rewards residents for submitting recyclable materials such as plastics, cans, and bottles.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the initiative via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, emphasizing its role in reducing waste pollution and promoting climate-friendly habits. Residents are rewarded every Thursday at designated collection points, with LAWMA’s Recycling Team actively engaging communities across Lagos Island and beyond.

The initiative aims to deepen public participation in waste management, create green jobs, and foster a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
