Lagos Lecturer Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Raping Student.

A Lagos State Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced Kolawole Muyiwa, a former part-time lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (now Lagos State University of Education), to life imprisonment for raping one of his students. Justice Rahman Oshodi delivered the verdict, stating that the prosecution had proven the charge of defilement beyond reasonable doubt.

The incident occurred on October 11, 2021, within the college’s premises in Oto-Ijanikin, Lagos State. The survivor testified that Muyiwa lured her into his office under the pretense of needing assistance with marking examination scripts. Once inside, he locked the door, overpowered her, and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her, despite her being menstruated at the time. After the assault, Muyiwa reportedly said, “What you refused to give me willingly, I have taken by force.”

In his defense, Muyiwa claimed he had asked the student for a platonic relationship and denied the rape allegations. However, Justice Oshodi found his testimony unconvincing, emphasizing that as a lecturer, Muyiwa held a position of trust and authority, which he egregiously abused. The judge noted the gravity of the offense and ordered that Muyiwa’s name be added to the Lagos State Sex Offender Register.

This case underscores the serious legal consequences of sexual misconduct within educational institutions and highlights the importance of safeguarding students’ rights and well-being.
