The Federal Government has withdrawn its approval for the N64 billion Osun State International Airport project in Ede, following a directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. Governor Ademola Adeleke had scheduled the foundation-laying ceremony for December 13, 2024. However, the Ministry requested a postponement to address disputes arising from the project’s relocation from Ido-Osun to Ede, the governor’s hometown.
A state government committee determined that the original Ido-Osun site did not meet essential aviation standards, prompting the proposed move to Ede. This decision has sparked controversy, with Ido-Osun residents protesting the relocation earlier this week, citing concerns over community interests and resource allocation.
In a letter dated December 6, 2024, Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Merinole emphasized the need to resolve existing disputes before proceeding. He noted that the airstrip is a federal project included in the Ministry’s 2024 budget, and any expansion to an international airport must align with federal objectives to ensure judicious use of public funds.
The Ministry’s intervention underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between state and federal authorities in infrastructure projects. It also highlights the necessity of addressing community concerns and adhering to regulatory standards to prevent resource wastage and ensure project success.
As of now, the foundation-laying ceremony has been postponed indefinitely, pending the resolution of the disputes and selection of a mutually agreed-upon date. Efforts are ongoing to harmonize the project’s plans with federal guidelines and address the petitions raised by concerned communities.
