The recent reappearance of notorious bandit leader Bello Turji in Sokoto State has instilled fear among local residents. Reports indicate that Turji has been imposing levies on villages and establishing new bases in the region. Aminu Boza, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing Sabon Birni Local Government, confirmed Turji’s activities, stating that he has demanded ₦25 million per village in certain communities.

In response to these developments, the Nigerian military has assured the public of its commitment to neutralizing Turji. Major General Emeka Onumajuru, the Chief of Defence Operations, emphasized that Turji is currently in hiding and under continuous surveillance by the Armed Forces. He stated, “As I speak, Bello Turji is completely in hiding, and the Armed Forces are tracking him. Very soon, he will be eliminated.”
Major General Onumajuru also addressed the issue of Turji imposing levies on local communities, urging residents to resist such demands and assuring them of military protection. He encouraged communities to trust in the Armed Forces’ presence and not to succumb to intimidation by criminal elements.
Despite these assurances, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has not provided specific details regarding the operations against Turji, leading to anxiety among residents. Efforts to obtain further comments from military officials have been unsuccessful, leaving the public uncertain about the immediate steps being taken to address Turji’s resurgence.
The situation remains tense, with communities in Sokoto State hoping for decisive action to eliminate the threat posed by Turji and his associates.
