At least 90 people were confirmed dead after a petrol tanker explosion occurred in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, on Tuesday.
Jigawa Police Spokesperson, Mr. Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday.
He added that 50 others had been hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries as a result of the explosion. The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University, leading to the explosion.
“The driver had departed from Kano and was en route to Nguru in Yobe when the accident occurred,” Adam stated.
He expressed concern that despite police warnings urging people to avoid accident scenes involving fuel tankers, they still engage in such risky behavior.
“The large crowd that gathered at the scene is the reason for the high number of casualties,” he explained.
Adam also mentioned that a mass burial for the victims would take place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, and those injured were receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
