The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withdrawn the recognition of 574 schools across Nigeria due to their involvement in examination malpractices. These schools will no longer serve as examination centres for WAEC, including the upcoming 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), scheduled from April 24 to June 20.
Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s National Office, announced this decision during a press briefing at the council’s headquarters in Lagos. He emphasized that the list of affected schools has been forwarded to the Federal Government through the Ministry of Education for further action.
In preparation for the 2025 WASSCE, WAEC has registered 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools. The council is introducing its first Computer-Based WASSCE (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates and implementing measures to ensure exam integrity, such as varying questions to prevent cheating.
WAEC’s decisive action underscores its commitment to upholding academic standards and deterring malpractice in the examination process.
