Tobi Amusan Wins Fifth National Title in Lagos, Nigeria

World record holder Tobi Amusan reaffirmed her dominance in the women’s 100m hurdles by clinching her fifth national title at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

Amusan, 28, stormed to victory with a time of 12.57 seconds, finishing ahead of Adaobi Tabugbo (13.03s) and Faith Osamuyi (13.36s). Her performance not only solidifies her status as Nigeria’s queen of hurdles but also builds momentum ahead of the World Athletics Championships scheduled for Tokyo this September.

The AFN National Trials showcased a new wave of athletic talent across multiple events. In the women’s 100m final, African U20 champion Chioma Cynthia Nweke stunned the field with a winning time of 11.27 seconds, beating defending champion Olayinka Olajide and Iyanuoluwa Bada. Meanwhile, Gafar Badmus claimed the men’s 400m title in 45.71 seconds, and Favour Onyah took gold in the women’s 400m after veteran Patience Okon-George was disqualified for a false start.

Amusan’s victory continues her remarkable journey in athletics, and her consistency on home soil is a promising sign as she prepares to compete on the global stage once again.
