Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems received the prestigious Diamond Award at Billboard’s inaugural Global Power Players event held in London on June 4, 2025. The event, which took place at Shoreditch House, celebrated influential figures in the global music industry. Tems was recognised for her growing impact and contribution to music on a global scale, joining an elite class of honourees that included Sir Elton John and EMPIRE founder Ghazi Shami.
The award was presented by Nkosiyati Khumalo, the incoming editor of Billboard Africa. In her acceptance speech, Tems expressed deep gratitude and reflected on the significance of the moment not only for herself but for African music at large. “Being African and a musician is a whole new world,” she said. “Billboard is one of the key players in moving that needle forward.”
Tems’ recognition comes at a time when she continues to break new ground for African women in music. She is Billboard’s most-awarded African artist to date and was the first Nigerian woman to be honoured at their Women in Music gala in 2024. The Diamond Award represents yet another milestone in her remarkable career.
The event also highlighted other influential figures in music. Sir Elton John received the Creators’ Champion Award, while Ghazi Shami was honoured with the Clive Davis Visionary Award, which was presented by Nigerian rapper and YBNL Nation boss, Olamide. The ceremony also marked the launch of Billboard’s first-ever UK Power Players chart, underscoring the event’s global significance.
As Tems continues to captivate international audiences with her distinctive sound and authenticity, the award serves as a symbol of the global recognition of African creativity. Her rise illustrates the expanding influence of Afrobeats and alternative African music in global markets, solidifying her place as a powerful force in the industry.
