Obisia Nwankpa, fondly known as “Golden Gloves,” has left an indelible mark on Nigerian boxing. His passing on June 3, 2025, at the age of 75, signifies the end of an era—but his legacy continues to inspire.

Born on May 19, 1955, in Lagos, Nwankpa’s boxing journey spanned over four decades, from a fierce competitor in the ring to a dedicated national coach. He represented Nigeria at the 1972 Munich Olympics, clinched gold at the 1973 All-Africa Games and the 1974 British Commonwealth Games, and later became Nigeria’s Lightweight Champion. His professional career boasted 29 bouts, 23 victories, and 16 knockouts.

After retiring, Nwankpa dedicated himself to coaching, leading Nigeria’s boxing team to two Olympic Games—Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008—mentoring future champions.

His final years were marked by a quiet struggle with dementia. His last public appearance in 2024 showed the toll of his battle, but even then, the respect he commanded remained strong.

Nwankpa’s passing is a significant loss to Nigerian sports, especially in a year that has already seen the deaths of football legend Christian Chukwu and boxing rising star Segun Olarenwaju. As tributes pour in, the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) has called for his immortalization in the country’s Sports Hall of Fame.

While his voice may have faded, his story will remain—a testament to resilience, excellence, and unwavering dedication to Nigerian boxing.
