The House of Representatives has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its planned subscription rate increase. This decision follows a motion raised by Representative Esosa Iyawe, who expressed concern over the proposed 20-25% hike—the second within a year, with the previous increase occurring in May 2024. Lawmakers argued that the increase would further burden Nigerians already struggling with economic challenges.
The House criticized MultiChoice’s dominant position in the pay-TV market, suggesting that its monopoly allows for unchecked price increases. Lawmakers pointed out that many Nigerians have voiced frustrations over frequent hikes without corresponding improvements in service quality. The debate also raised concerns about the lack of alternative service providers, which limits consumer choice and competition in the sector.
In response, the House mandated its Committee on Commerce to investigate the arbitrary increase in subscription prices by MultiChoice. The committee is expected to examine the company’s pricing structure, evaluate its justification for the increase, and ensure the implementation of cost-effective policies in the pay-TV sector. A report on their findings is expected within four weeks.
This legislative action highlights the government’s commitment to protecting consumers from potential exploitation and ensuring fair pricing practices in essential services. Lawmakers emphasized the need for stronger regulatory oversight to prevent future arbitrary price hikes and promote a more competitive market for Nigerian consumers.
