The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed that prepaid electricity meters are free of charge, urging citizens not to pay unauthorized fees to obtain them.
Officials explained that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve transparency in the power sector, eliminate estimated billing, and ensure fairness for electricity consumers nationwide. Distribution companies (DisCos) have been directed to provide prepaid meters without hidden charges, while regulatory agencies continue to monitor compliance.
The government emphasized that any demand for payment in exchange for prepaid meters is illegal and should be reported to the appropriate authorities. This move is expected to boost consumer confidence and strengthen accountability in Nigeria’s electricity supply system.
