NLC Suspends Nationwide Protest Against Telecom Tariff Hike.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned nationwide protest against the proposed 50% increase in telecom tariffs, originally scheduled to take place this month. The decision comes after a series of negotiations between the labor union, the Federal Government, and key stakeholders in the telecommunications sector.

The protest was initially called in response to the planned tariff hike by telecom operators, citing rising operational costs and inflation. The NLC had argued that increasing call and data charges would further burden Nigerians already struggling with economic hardship. However, following high-level discussions, the labor union agreed to put the protest on hold while talks continue.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated that the suspension does not mean the issue is resolved but rather that dialogue is ongoing. He emphasized that the Congress remains committed to protecting Nigerians from excessive charges and urged the government to explore alternative solutions to support telecom operators without passing the cost onto consumers.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assured the public that any tariff adjustment will follow due process and consider the economic realities of citizens. The Commission also confirmed ongoing engagement with telecom companies to address their concerns while ensuring affordability and quality service delivery.

With the protest on hold, attention now shifts to further negotiations between labor groups, telecom regulators, and industry players. The outcome of these discussions will determine whether the tariff hike will proceed or be reconsidered, as Nigerians eagerly await a resolution that balances industry sustainability with consumer protection.
