The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved N4.8 billion for the treatment of HIV/AIDS following the recent suspension of funding by the United States. This move aims to sustain essential healthcare services for thousands of Nigerians living with the virus, ensuring that life-saving medications and support programs remain accessible despite the funding gap.

The US, through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has been a major contributor to Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS response, providing billions of naira in support annually. However, the recent suspension of funds raised concerns about potential setbacks in treatment and prevention efforts. In response, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the N4.8 billion intervention to prevent disruptions in healthcare delivery.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to combating HIV/AIDS and improving public health services. He stated that the funds will be directed towards antiretroviral drugs, diagnostic equipment, and support services for affected individuals. He also emphasized that the government is working to establish long-term funding strategies to reduce reliance on foreign aid.

Healthcare experts and advocacy groups have welcomed the government’s intervention but stress the need for sustainable domestic funding for HIV/AIDS programs. Many have called for improved healthcare infrastructure, increased awareness campaigns, and stronger partnerships with private sector stakeholders to ensure continuous progress in the fight against the disease.

With over 1.9 million people living with HIV in Nigeria, the new funding allocation is expected to mitigate the impact of the PEPFAR funding suspension. The government has reassured citizens that efforts to combat HIV/AIDS will not be compromised, and it is exploring additional measures to maintain Nigeria’s commitment to achieving an HIV-free generation.
