The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, advising him against engaging in conflicts with the union. This caution follows an incident where security operatives reportedly invaded the NLC’s office in Edo State. The NLC expressed concern over the “illegal breaking and entry” into its offices by personnel from the Edo State Police Command. The union emphasized that such acts of intimidation against trade unions or their leaders are unacceptable, as they violate trade union and human rights and pose a threat to democracy.
In a statement signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC demanded an unconditional apology and corrective action regarding the incident. The union also advised Governor Okpebholo to focus on more pressing priorities and avoid interfering in labor matters. Ajaero stated, “As a brand-new governor, he should have his priorities. We would hate to think that authorizing the harassment of trade union leaders is one of them.”
The NLC further urged the police to uphold their integrity and refrain from being used for unlawful activities. The union warned, “Leave the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress alone! It is too soon to start a fight with us.”
This development highlights the NLC’s commitment to protecting the rights of trade unions and their leaders. The union’s prompt response underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law in labor relations.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Governor Okpebholo will address the NLC’s concerns and whether this incident will impact labor relations in Edo State.
