In a sweeping anti-narcotics operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested former international footballer Segun George Hunkarin and four others over their alleged involvement in trafficking 22.6 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine through Nigeria’s major airports.

Hunkarin was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, while allegedly waiting to collect a consignment of 800 grams of cocaine from his associate, Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu, who had just arrived from Turkey via Addis Ababa. Chinedu was caught with 37 wraps of cocaine concealed in his carry-on luggage.

In a separate operation at Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu, NDLEA operatives intercepted Ezenwaka Chibuzor Emmanuel, a Mozambique-based bar attendant, with 17.5kg of methamphetamine and 3.05kg of cocaine hidden in bedsheets. Another suspect, Azu Follygan Kpodar, was caught with 1.25kg of liquid cocaine disguised as liquid soap.

Also arrested at Lagos airport was Amen Okoro Godstime, a Europe-based businessman, who attempted to smuggle 5,000 pills of Tramadol 225mg disguised as malaria medication. He reportedly planned to distribute the drugs across France and Italy.

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.) praised the agency’s operatives for their vigilance and reiterated the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks across Nigeria.
