The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently apprehended Ezeokoli Sylva, a 59-year-old Nigerian businessman, for attempting to smuggle 700 grams of cocaine concealed within his stomach. Sylva, who had lived in Brazil for over three decades, was detained at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on November 29, 2024, after arriving on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, via Addis Ababa. A body scan conducted by NDLEA officials revealed foreign objects in Sylva’s stomach, which were later confirmed to be wrapped packets of cocaine.

Sylva’s arrest came after a thorough investigation by the NDLEA, which included monitoring his arrival and scanning for illicit substances. Once detected, Sylva was placed under medical observation, during which he expelled 29 wraps of cocaine from his stomach. The businessman reportedly stated that he had smuggled the drugs to raise funds for his business, which dealt primarily with provisions, shoes, and clothes. His arrest highlights the ongoing vigilance of Nigerian authorities in combating international drug trafficking.

In addition to Sylva’s case, the NDLEA has recently made other significant seizures. On November 26, 2024, operatives intercepted two consignments of drugs destined for the United Kingdom. These included 200 grams of cocaine, concealed in local fabrics, and 40 ampoules of pentazocine injections hidden in cartons. This operation demonstrates the agency’s continued efforts to thwart the flow of illicit substances, not only within Nigeria but also to international destinations.

The NDLEA’s work is part of broader national and international efforts to curb the drug trade. The agency, under the leadership of Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, has strengthened its operations over recent years, focusing on dismantling networks involved in the trafficking of both local and foreign drugs. Their work has received widespread praise, especially as they continue to uncover large-scale operations that threaten public health and safety.

As the investigation into Sylva’s case continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges faced by Nigeria and other nations in addressing drug smuggling. The NDLEA’s role in intercepting such operations remains crucial in the fight against the global drug trade. Authorities have pledged to continue their efforts to identify and dismantle criminal networks involved in trafficking harmful substances .
