NDLEA Defends Drug Tests for Corps Members, Couples as Preventive Measure.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has defended its proposal to conduct drug integrity tests for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and prospective couples, emphasizing that the initiative is preventive rather than punitive.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), stated that the tests aim to discourage substance abuse, facilitate early intervention, and provide treatment for individuals who test positive before their condition deteriorates into drug dependence and other health complications. He highlighted the growing drug menace in the country, noting that “one in seven Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 uses drugs” .

Marwa made these remarks during a meeting with NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja. He commended the NYSC’s efforts in promoting unity and described the agency as a national treasure. Marwa also praised the introduction of War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) clubs in NYSC orientation camps, describing it as a commendable step .

In response to the NDLEA’s proposal, the NYSC clarified that it cannot enforce mandatory drug tests for corps members due to legal and operational constraints. The NYSC emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to address substance abuse among youths .

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the NDLEA to extend the proposed drug tests to political office holders and aspirants. NANS Vice President Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Felicia, stated that applying the same standards to those in positions of power would demonstrate leadership by example and promote a drug-free society .

The NDLEA maintains that the drug integrity test initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce drug demand through prevention, counseling, and rehabilitation, complementing efforts to cut off access to drugs.
