MTN Implements 50% Tariff Hike, Raises Data Prices.

MTN Nigeria has officially implemented a 50% increase in its data and SMS tariffs, marking a significant change for its subscribers. This decision comes after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) granted approval for the tariff hike in January. The new prices impact several data plans, with the 1.8GB monthly plan now priced at ₦1,500, up from ₦1,000, and the 20GB plan seeing an increase from ₦5,500 to ₦7,500. The price hikes are part of MTN’s efforts to adjust to the rising operational costs in the telecommunications sector.

Larger data plans have experienced even steeper hikes. For instance, the 1.5TB 90-day plan, previously available for ₦150,000, has now been increased to ₦240,000. These changes are expected to affect the affordability of data for many Nigerians, with some subscribers expressing frustration over the sudden price adjustments. The move is expected to generate significant discourse among the telecom user base.

While the telecom company defends the tariff hikes as necessary to sustain the industry amidst economic challenges, the increase has faced backlash from consumer advocacy groups. The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has expressed its dissatisfaction, arguing that the hike should have been capped at a lower percentage, specifically 10%. According to NATCOMS, the 50% increase is a heavy burden for many Nigerians already grappling with high living costs.

Further criticism has come from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which has described the price hikes as “insensitive” and “unjustifiable.” The NLC has strongly opposed the tariff increases, warning that they will put a strain on the average Nigerian household. The union has announced plans to stage nationwide protests to voice their discontent with the decision and demand a review of the policy.

The tariff hikes come at a time when many Nigerians are already struggling with rising inflation, and the increased costs could affect how people access telecommunication services. While the NCC has approved the adjustments to ensure the sustainability of the sector, the backlash from both consumers and unions highlights the growing concern over the economic impact of such price increases.
