Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has dismissed rumors of her resignation, stating that she remains committed to her duties. Speculation about her departure arose after an unsigned circular dated February 17, 2025, suggested she had stepped down. However, her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, has debunked the claims, emphasizing that Meranda continues to lead the Assembly.
The Lagos Assembly has been facing a leadership crisis since the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa, who was impeached while abroad, has challenged the legality of his removal in court. Despite the tensions, 36 out of the 40 Assembly members have expressed confidence in Meranda’s leadership, reaffirming their support through a formal vote.
Addressing the resignation rumors, Ajiboye stated that there is no truth to the reports and that Meranda has no intention of stepping down. He stressed that the Speaker remains fully engaged in legislative activities and focused on governance in Lagos State. The Assembly has also denied allegations that 27 of its members have defected to the Labour Party.
Otunba Ogundipe Olukayode, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, described the defection claims as false and misleading. He urged the public to disregard misinformation and assured Lagosians that the Assembly remains stable despite ongoing political maneuvering.
As the leadership crisis continues, Speaker Meranda has reassured Lagosians that the House remains dedicated to its legislative responsibilities. While political tensions persist, she has vowed to continue serving in her role, ensuring the smooth operation of the Assembly.
