The Federal Government is set to unveil a comprehensive new railway development plan aimed at enhancing connectivity across multiple Nigerian cities. This strategic initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to modernize the nation’s transport infrastructure and stimulate economic growth by easing the movement of people and goods.
According to sources within the Ministry of Transportation, the plan will prioritize high-traffic corridors and economically significant zones, linking urban centers such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu. The proposal includes both the rehabilitation of existing lines and the construction of new standard gauge routes that will allow for faster and more efficient rail services.
Minister of Transportation, during a recent press briefing, emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing pressure on the road network and cutting down on travel time between regions. He noted that the new railway plan would significantly improve logistics, promote regional integration, and attract foreign investment to the country’s transport sector.
Funding for the project is expected to come from a mix of federal allocations, international loans, and private sector partnerships. The government is also exploring public-private partnership (PPP) models to ensure long-term sustainability and efficient project execution, especially in high-demand routes.
Stakeholders in the transport and logistics industry have welcomed the announcement, calling it a step in the right direction. They believe the new rail system will not only enhance trade but also create employment opportunities and foster regional development. The official unveiling of the plan is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
