FG Imposes Height Restrictions for Iddo Bridge Repairs in Lagos.

The Federal Government has announced plans to install height restriction barriers on the Iddo Bridge in Lagos to facilitate essential repairs. This measure aims to limit heavy vehicular movement, particularly by articulated trucks, to ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge during the repair process.

Constructed in 1973, the Iddo Bridge has not undergone any major repairs since its inception. Recent structural evaluations revealed defects in some of its spans, necessitating immediate attention. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, emphasized the importance of proactive measures to prevent potential incidents, stating that the installation of height barriers will reduce the bridge’s capacity by about 60%, restricting access to light vehicles only.

The repair project is expected to last for six months, during which three out of the bridge’s 25 spans will be broken down and recast. To accommodate the repair work, traffic will be diverted in phases: one side of the bridge will remain open to light vehicles while work is conducted on the other, and vice versa until the project is completed.

Motorists, especially drivers of articulated trucks, are advised to heed diversion signs and seek alternative routes, such as the Ijora Bridge, during this period. The Federal Ministry of Works is collaborating with the Lagos State government to ensure smooth traffic management and to minimize inconvenience to road users.

The government appeals for public cooperation and understanding, emphasizing that these measures are crucial for the safety of all bridge users and the successful completion of the necessary repairs. Regular updates will be provided to keep the public informed about the progress of the project and any changes to traffic arrangements.
