The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested prominent Nigerian businesswoman and socialite, Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The arrest occurred around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, shortly after her voluntary return from London.
Achimugu had been declared wanted by the EFCC in March 2025 over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. Her legal team had informed the Federal High Court in Abuja of her intention to cooperate with the EFCC’s investigation and to appear before the commission on April 29, as directed by Justice Inyang Ekwo.
Despite her voluntary return and prior notification to the authorities, Achimugu was taken into custody upon arrival. Her lawyer, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu, criticized the EFCC’s action, describing it as a violation of the court’s directive and a breach of her fundamental rights. Ojukwu also disclosed that Achimugu had commenced a hunger strike in protest of her arrest.
The EFCC has not yet issued an official statement regarding the specifics of the allegations or whether Achimugu will be detained beyond the scheduled court appearance on April 30, 2025. Achimugu, known for her involvement in Nigeria’s business and philanthropic circles, has not publicly commented on the arrest.
This development follows a court order mandating Achimugu to appear before the EFCC on April 29 and before the court on April 30 to continue legal proceedings related to the ongoing investigation.
