Nigerian Fans Celebrate Historic British TV Series ‘Doctor Who’ Episode Set In Lagos.

Nigerian fans are celebrating a historic milestone as Doctor Who aired its first-ever episode set primarily in Africa, spotlighting Lagos in the Season 2 episode titled “The Story and the Engine.” This groundbreaking installment not only marks a geographical first for the iconic British sci-fi series but also weaves West African folklore into its narrative, offering a rich tapestry of culture and storytelling.

The episode, penned by Nigerian playwright Inua Ellams, is set in a vibrant Lagos barber shop where the Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, encounters a mysterious barber (Ariyon Bakare) and a new villain inspired by the legendary spider Anansi. Ellams, known for his play Barber Shop Chronicles, brings authenticity and depth to the script, blending meta-narrative elements with themes of community, identity, and resilience.

For many Nigerian fans, this episode is a dream realized. Adesoji Kukoyi, a lifelong Doctor Who enthusiast, expressed his excitement: “When I heard the ‘oooh-oooh-oooooh’ [theme tune], I dropped everything and ran straight to the television.” The Lagos setting, combined with the Doctor’s experiences within a Black African community, resonated deeply, highlighting the show’s evolving inclusivity.

Despite challenges in accessing the show—Doctor Who no longer airs on Nigerian public television and is available exclusively on Disney+—fans remain hopeful. Kukoyi believes this Lagos-centric episode might inspire a new generation of Nigerian viewers: “There’s a dedicated troop of Nigerian Doctor Who lovers,” he said, optimistic that the show’s legacy will continue to thrive in Nigerian homes.

“The Story and the Engine” stands as a testament to Doctor Who’s commitment to diverse storytelling, offering a narrative that is both globally resonant and deeply rooted in Nigerian culture.
