Nigeria’s tech landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, and Enugu is at the heart of this transformation. The 2025 Enugu Tech Festival, aptly themed Coal to Code, marks a pivotal moment in the state’s transition from its coal-driven industrial past to a future fueled by technology and innovation.
The event, touted as Nigeria’s largest tech gathering, has drawn thousands of young tech enthusiasts, investors, and industry leaders. With heavy backing from the Enugu State Government and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, this festival highlights the growing momentum of Nigeria’s digital economy.
Historically known for its rich coal reserves, Enugu is redefining itself as a hub for technological advancement. Over the last two years, the state has invested in digital infrastructure, fostered an innovation ecosystem, and created an enabling environment for startups and tech entrepreneurs. These efforts are setting the foundation for a new identity—one rooted in knowledge, creativity, and technology.
Governor Peter Mbah, in his speech at the festival, emphasized the critical role of technology in shaping the future: “We are now in an era where ideas can disrupt entire industries. Companies like Uber, Tesla, and Airbnb have leveraged digital platforms to change the way we live and work. Enugu is positioning itself to be a part of this global shift.”
Enugu’s approach to building a tech-driven future goes beyond conferences and speeches. Investments in cybersecurity, digital education, and AI research are actively being made. With key stakeholders—including government officials, investors, and tech pioneers—collaborating, the festival serves as a launchpad for groundbreaking initiatives.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, praised the event, calling it “the biggest technology conference in Nigeria’s history.” His endorsement underscores the festival’s significance and its potential to shape the trajectory of Nigeria’s digital economy.
As Enugu takes strides toward becoming Nigeria’s leading tech hub, the future looks promising. With annual festivals planned, a surge in startup activity, and increased investments in tech infrastructure, the Coal to Code movement is just beginning.
For Nigeria to achieve true digital transformation, other states must follow suit—embracing innovation, fostering collaboration, and investing in their tech ecosystems. Enugu has set the blueprint; now, it’s time for others to step up.
