Former Super Eagles Coach Christian Chukwu Dies at 74.

Former Super Eagles coach and captain, Christian Chukwu, has passed away at the age of 74. He died in the early hours of Saturday, April 12, 2025, in his home state of Enugu.

Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman,” was a towering figure in Nigerian football. As a player, he captained the Nigerian national team—then known as the Green Eagles—to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980.  He earned 54 caps and scored five goals for Nigeria between 1974 and 1981.

Following his playing career, Chukwu transitioned into coaching, leading various teams including Enugu Rangers, the Kenya national team, and the Nigerian national team. Under his guidance, Nigeria reached the semifinals of the 2004 AFCON.

In 2019, Chukwu faced health challenges that required medical treatment abroad. The Nigeria Football Federation and philanthropist Femi Otedola provided financial support for his treatment in the United Kingdom.

Tributes have poured in from across the football community, with former teammates and officials mourning the loss of a national icon. Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, a longtime friend and teammate, confirmed Chukwu’s passing, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

Chukwu is survived by his wife and four children. His legacy as a player, coach, and mentor will continue to inspire future generations in Nigerian football.
