Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially confirmed his intention to contest Nigeria’s presidency in the 2027 general election. In a statement shared through his longtime associate and spokesperson, Tunde Olusunle, Atiku dismissed recent speculation suggesting he might step away from the race. Speaking from his holiday residence in the United Arab Emirates, he clarified that comments made by Prof. Ola Olateju, who had represented him at a political event, were unauthorized and did not reflect his position.
Atiku stated unequivocally, “I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned to.” He cited the worsening state of poverty, national decline, and lack of accountability under the current administration as key motivations for his renewed ambition. The former PDP presidential candidate emphasized that his goal is not driven by personal ambition but by a commitment to national recovery and reform.
He also reaffirmed his support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, which he believes will “shock the world” in the upcoming elections. According to Olusunle, Atiku views the ADC as a potent mass movement capable of challenging the status quo and mobilizing Nigerians toward meaningful change. His declaration comes amid growing political realignments and signals a determined effort to galvanize opposition forces ahead of 2027.
Atiku’s announcement has reignited conversations about leadership, generational transition, and the future of Nigeria’s democracy. As one of the country’s most experienced political figures, his entry into the race is expected to reshape the dynamics of the upcoming election cycle.
