Unoma Akpabio, wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, seeking ₦250 billion in damages. This legal action follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public allegations that the Senate President made inappropriate advances toward her.
In the suit filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Mrs. Akpabio contends that these accusations have caused her and her family significant emotional distress and have tarnished their reputation. She is requesting a declaration that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s statements are defamatory, an order restraining her from making further such claims, and a public apology published in two national newspapers.
Responding to the lawsuit, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has advised Mrs. Akpabio to allow her husband to address the allegations personally. Through her legal representative, she maintains that her claims are substantiated and expresses readiness to present evidence in court.
This legal dispute has attracted public attention, with discussions focusing on the conduct of public officials and the appropriate channels for addressing such serious allegations. The court’s forthcoming decisions are anticipated to shed light on these contentious issues.
