World Bowls Tour Reverses Ban on Israeli Players Amid Controversy

In a significant turn of events, the World Bowls Tour (WBT) has revoked its ban on Israeli players, allowing them to compete in the upcoming World Indoor Bowls Championships. The decision comes after intense pressure from various pro-Palestinian groups and a subsequent review of security measures.

Initially, the WBT had withdrawn invitations to three Israeli players—Daniel Alomin, Amnon Amar, and Itai Rigbi—citing political concerns following their participation in the Scottish International Open. The ban was met with widespread criticism, including from MP Rupert Lowe, who expressed his disgust and welcomed the reversal.

The WBT’s new statement confirmed that additional security measures have been implemented, enabling the Israeli players to participate. Alomin will compete in the World Open Singles, while Amar and Rigbi will feature in the World Open Pairs. The WBT acknowledged the challenging circumstances and expressed satisfaction with the inclusive outcome.

The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Israeli athletes in international sports. Pro-Palestinian groups had called for the ban, accusing Israel of apartheid and referencing the 1977 Gleneagles Agreement. However, the Board of Deputies of British Jews condemned the initial ban as discriminatory.

The broader context includes the 14-month war between Israel and Hamas, which has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Despite the conflict, Israeli athletes have generally not faced bans in other sports, although there have been calls for suspensions from organizations like the Palestine Football Association.
