The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revoked 762 plots of land in Abuja due to the failure to pay for Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O). The affected properties, located in the upscale Maitama 1 District, are owned by prominent Nigerians and corporate organizations. Among the notable individuals impacted are former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen, and ex-governors Rochas Okorocha, Ben Ayade, and Seriake Dickson. Former and serving federal lawmakers, including Dino Melaye, Enyinnaya Abaribe, and Abdul Ningi, also had their plots revoked.
Additionally, Wike issued a two-week ultimatum to 614 other individuals and entities to settle outstanding fees or risk losing their Rights of Occupancy (R-of-O). The notice stated that the Federal Capital Territory Administration has withdrawn the Right of Occupancy to the land/property for those who failed to make payment for their C-of-O bills after the expiration of the grace period granted by the Honourable Minister, Federal Capital Territory, pursuant to the provisions of Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978.
