Tensions Rise in Bayelsa as Rival Factions Plan Same-Day Rallies.

Political tensions have escalated in Bayelsa State as supporters of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Douye Diri plan separate rallies on the same day. The pro-Wike group, led by George Turnah, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), initially scheduled their rally for April 12, 2025, in Yenagoa. However, a Bayelsa State High Court issued an interim injunction restraining the group from holding the rally, citing concerns over potential public disorder. Despite the court order, Turnah insisted that the rally would proceed, asserting that it was intended to appreciate President Bola Tinubu for appointing Bayelsa indigenes into key positions, not to honor Minister Wike .

In response, Governor Diri’s supporters organized a counter-rally to demonstrate solidarity with the governor and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal. The simultaneous scheduling of these rallies has raised concerns about possible clashes between the opposing factions. Governor Diri expressed apprehension over the potential for violence and urged security agencies to intervene to maintain peace and order in the state .

Adding to the tension, Ijaw youth groups have called on Minister Wike to avoid visiting Bayelsa State, accusing him of attempting to destabilize the region. They argue that the planned rally by his supporters could incite unrest and threaten the state’s stability. In a related development, George Turnah petitioned President Tinubu, alleging threats to his life from loyalists of Governor Diri and seeking federal protection .

The unfolding events underscore the deepening divisions within the PDP and the broader political landscape in Bayelsa State. As both factions prepare for their respective rallies, stakeholders and observers are calling for restraint and dialogue to prevent the situation from escalating into violence. The outcome of these rallies could have significant implications for the state’s political future and the unity of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
