Lagos State Says BRT Replacement Delayed as Costs Surge

0

The Lagos State Government has explained that replacing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses destroyed during the #EndSARS protests has been delayed because each bus now costs about ₦280 million, up from ₦80 million. The sharp rise in price has made procurement more difficult, slowing down efforts to restore the fleet.

This development highlights the broader challenge of infrastructure recovery in Nigeria’s largest city. Public transport is central to Lagos life, and the BRT system was designed to ease congestion and provide affordable mobility. Rising costs not only delay replacement but also affect commuters who rely on the service daily.

The issue matters because transport is more than logistics—it is culture, economy, and identity. Reliable buses mean access to work, education, and entertainment. Without them, the strain on Lagos residents grows, and the city’s creative and economic energy risks being stifled.

Globally, inflation and supply chain pressures have driven up vehicle costs, but Lagos’s situation is particularly acute given its population density and reliance on public transport. The delay underscores how economic realities can ripple into social and cultural life.
