UK Investigates 1,955 Nigerian Nurses Over Exam Fraud Allegations.

The United Kingdom’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is investigating 1,955 Nigerian nurses and midwives for alleged examination fraud linked to the Yunnik Technologies Test Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State. This follows the NMC’s detection of unusual data patterns suggesting that some candidates may have fraudulently obtained their Computer-Based Test (CBT) results, a requirement for foreign-trained nurses seeking UK registration.

The investigation has led to significant consequences for the implicated healthcare professionals. The UK Home Office has revoked the visas of several Nigerian nurses under scrutiny, instructing them to leave the country. This action has disrupted their employment and raised concerns about due process.

In response, over 100 Nigerian nurses have appealed to the UK Health Secretary, contesting the NMC’s allegations. They argue that many have retaken the CBT in the UK, achieving similar results without irregularities, and assert that technical issues in Nigeria may have contributed to the initial anomalies. The nurses are calling for a fair review process to restore their professional reputations.

The NMC maintains that its actions aim to uphold the integrity of the nursing profession and ensure patient safety. The council acknowledges the distress caused to the affected individuals and emphasizes the importance of thorough and fair investigations.

This situation underscores the critical need for stringent oversight in the certification processes for healthcare professionals and highlights the broader implications of examination fraud on international professional mobility and trust in credentialing systems.
