South African breakout star Tyla continues her global rise after clinching the award for Best Afrobeats at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), held on Sunday, September 7, at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
Tyla won the Moon Person trophy for her hit single “PUSH 2 START”, a track that has dominated streaming platforms and strengthened her status as one of Africa’s biggest musical exports.

This victory marks a significant moment for Afrobeats on the global stage, as the genre continues to gain recognition and inspire international collaborations.
The 22-year-old star, already known for her Grammy-winning song “Water”, expressed gratitude to her fans and dedicated the win to African artists breaking barriers worldwide.
The night also saw major wins from Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter, but Tyla’s achievement highlighted the growing influence of African music in mainstream pop culture.
