Trump Faces Sentencing in Hush Money Case, Likely to Avoid Jail.

President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled for sentencing on January 10, 2025, following his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The sentencing date falls just ten days before his inauguration.

Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over the trial, has indicated that Trump is unlikely to face imprisonment. The judge suggested that an “unconditional discharge” is the most viable outcome, meaning Trump would not receive jail time, fines, or probation, though the conviction would remain on his record.

Trump’s legal team had filed a motion to dismiss the case, citing a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity for official acts. However, Judge Merchan denied the motion, stating that the ruling does not apply to a president-elect and emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law.

In response to the upcoming sentencing, Trump has criticized the judicial system, labeling the proceedings as a “witch hunt” orchestrated by political adversaries. He maintains his innocence and has expressed intentions to appeal the conviction.

This case marks the first time a U.S. president-elect has been convicted of felony crimes. Despite the legal challenges, Trump is poised to assume the presidency on January 20, 2025. Legal experts note that, as this is a state case, he does not have the authority to pardon himself.
