Two Children Killed, 20 Injured in Gombe Eid Ground Stampede.

A tragic incident occurred at the Gombe main Eid Ground following Eid prayers when a stampede at the exit gate resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 20 others. The stampede was reportedly caused by inadequate exit access, leading to overcrowding as a large crowd, primarily women and children, rushed to leave the venue. Intense heat exacerbated the situation, contributing to the unfortunate outcome.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed that two victims—a four-year-old boy and a six-month-old baby girl—were pronounced dead while receiving medical treatment. The remaining 20 individuals were promptly taken to hospitals for care. The police have extended condolences to the bereaved families and advised Eid Ground managers to ensure all entrance and exit gates remain open to facilitate smooth movement, especially after prayers.

In response to the incident, Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed deep sorrow and condoled with the families of the deceased and those affected. He has directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the stampede to prevent future occurrences. The governor also ordered that all medical expenses for the injured victims be fully covered by the state government to ensure their recovery and well-being.

The stampede has raised concerns about crowd control measures at public events, particularly during large gatherings like the Eid prayers. Authorities have been urged to implement more effective crowd management strategies to prevent such tragedies in the future. Local residents and attendees at the event have also called for better planning and organization at the Eid grounds to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, especially children and vulnerable groups.
