Renowned Islamic Scholar Muyideen Bello Dies at 84.

The Muslim community worldwide is mourning the loss of Sheikh Muyideen Ajani Bello, a revered Islamic scholar and preacher, who passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the age of 84. Sheikh Bello, known for his eloquent and fearless sermons, died in the early hours of the day, leaving a legacy of unwavering commitment to Islam and moral teachings. His passing was confirmed by close associates and fellow Islamic clerics on social media, sparking an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the globe.

Born in 1940 in Ibadan, Oyo State, into a devout Muslim family, Sheikh Bello began his journey in Islamic education at a young age. He attended I.D.C. Primary School and Elekuro Secondary School before pursuing advanced Arabic and Islamic studies at Mahdul Arabiy, Elekuro, between 1963 and 1967. His deep knowledge of the Quran and Hadith earned him recognition early in life, and by the age of 10, he was already delivering sermons in Ibadan. Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to the dissemination of Islamic knowledge, serving as a teacher and Missioner for the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria.

Sheikh Bello’s influence extended far beyond Nigeria, with invitations to preach in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and neighboring African nations. His fearless approach to addressing societal issues, coupled with his commitment to promoting Islamic monotheism and civic virtue, endeared him to millions. His sermons, often delivered with wit and wisdom, addressed pressing issues such as leadership, morality, and the need for unity within the Muslim community.

In addition to his preaching, Sheikh Bello was a teacher who impacted the lives of countless students during his tenure at secondary schools in Oyo, Ogun, and Kano States. His dedication to education and spiritual guidance earned him respect not only within the Muslim community but also among people of other faiths. Many have described him as a bridge-builder, whose teachings emphasized love, tolerance, and understanding.

Tributes have poured in from various quarters, including political leaders, religious organizations, and his followers. The Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, described his death as a national loss, highlighting his over four decades of advocacy for piety, responsible leadership, and societal harmony. As the Muslim community reflects on his life and teachings, Sheikh Muyideen Bello’s legacy will undoubtedly endure, serving as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
