Pope Francis Diagnosed With Pneumonia In Both Lungs

Pope Francis, who was hospitalized four days ago for bronchitis, is facing a “complex clinical picture,” the Vatican announced on Monday. The 88-year-old pontiff’s hospital stay at Rome’s Gemelli hospital is expected to be longer than initially anticipated due to the severity of his condition.

According to a statement from the Vatican, recent tests have revealed a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract, prompting changes in his treatment. “All the tests carried out until now are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require adequate hospitalization,” the statement read. A source close to the pope confirmed that he is receiving oxygen.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni reassured the public, stating that Pope Francis is in “good humor” despite the challenging circumstances. However, the cancellation of his scheduled Wednesday audience has raised fresh concerns about his health.

Pope Francis, who had part of one of his lungs removed as a young man, has experienced increasing health issues in recent years. These issues include persistent knee pain requiring a wheelchair, a hernia operation, surgery for diverticulitis, and multiple bouts of bronchitis. In addition, the pope has had several falls, resulting in bruises and minor injuries.

Despite these challenges, Pope Francis has remained active. In September 2024, he completed a four-nation Asia-Pacific tour, the longest of his papacy. However, his recent health struggles have left him “weakened” after a particularly busy two weeks, according to a source within his entourage.

The pope’s dedication to maintaining a busy schedule, even in the face of health issues, is a testament to his commitment to his role. As the world watches and prays for his recovery, the Vatican continues to provide updates on his condition.
