Officers of the Lagos State Police Command have fired tear gas to disperse protesters gathered to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.

Videos shared on Sunday morning showed protesters fleeing as police fired shots.

The protesters had assembled at the Lekki Toll Gate around 8:30 a.m., carrying banners and placards, demanding the full implementation of the reports from various judicial panels of inquiry established after the 2020 protests.

In October 2020, thousands of young people gathered in major cities across Nigeria to protest against the persistent harassment, killings, and extortion by officers of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The protest reached a tragic climax at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, where several youths were allegedly killed and many others critically injured following the intervention of the Nigerian military.

In response to the protests, judicial panels were set up in various states to examine and address the demands of the protesters.

Nearly four years later, protest leaders have voiced disappointment that many of the panels’ recommendations have yet to be implemented.
