Tragedy struck in Calabar, Cross River State, on Tuesday evening when a Nigerian police officer, Inspector Stephen Enang, collapsed and died while watching the UEFA Champions League match between Arsenal and Real Madrid. The incident occurred at a viewing center on Abang-Asang Street, where the late officer had joined other football fans to enjoy the much-anticipated clash.
According to eyewitnesses, Enang, a devoted Arsenal supporter, was visibly thrilled as Arsenal put up a strong performance, celebrating each goal with excitement. He remained energetic and engaged throughout the match, which ended in Arsenal’s favor. However, after the final whistle, fans noticed he had become unusually quiet and motionless in his seat.
Efforts to revive him at the scene failed, prompting others to rush him to the Police Hospital in Akim. Sadly, doctors confirmed that he was brought in dead. The cause of his sudden collapse remains unknown at the time of reporting, though many speculate it could have been a heart-related issue triggered by emotional excitement or underlying health conditions.
As of now, the Cross River State Police Command has not released an official statement on the matter. The incident has drawn reactions from the public, with many expressing condolences and also raising concerns about the health implications of emotional stress during high-stakes sporting events.
