In a bold and emphatic statement, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has denied widespread rumors suggesting he plans to dump the party. Speaking at the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on April 9, Obi declared, “I’ve not told anybody that I’m leaving the Labour Party,” putting to rest growing speculation over his political future.

The NEC meeting, which was attended by key party stakeholders including his 2023 running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, served as a critical forum to assess the party’s direction following the 2023 elections. Party leaders used the opportunity to regroup and refocus ahead of the 2027 general elections, with unity and restructuring taking center stage in the discussions.

Peter Obi used the platform to call for transparency and fairness within the Labour Party, stressing the need to build a credible political alternative for Nigerians. “We want to build a party that is fair, just, and one the people can trust,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to staying the course and working to strengthen the party from within.

The clarification comes after weeks of speculation that Obi might decamp due to internal rifts and growing tensions within the party. His firm declaration now shifts the narrative, sending a strong message to both supporters and critics that he remains rooted in the Labour Party and ready to lead it into the next political battle.
