Petrol Tanker Explodes in Oyo After Crash, Firefighters Avert Major Disaster

A petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) exploded on Monday, June 23, 2025, after crashing along the Iseyin/Oyo Road in Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to the Oyo State Fire Service, the tanker—bearing registration number LM62XP (Lagos)—lost control while in motion, veered off the road near NICO Farm, and somersaulted into a ditch before catching fire.

Emergency responders, led by PFS1 Azeez, arrived swiftly after receiving a distress call at 10:46 a.m.. Firefighters deployed chemical foam to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures or vehicles. Thanks to their rapid intervention, the fire was completely extinguished and no casualties were reported.

This marks the second tanker-related incident in Oyo State in less than two weeks, raising fresh concerns about the safety of transporting petroleum products across Nigeria’s highways. Authorities have attributed the crash to driver error and lack of concentration, and are urging stricter enforcement of tanker safety regulations.
