In the recent local government elections held in Osun State on February 22, 2025, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) achieved a sweeping victory, securing all 30 chairmanship and 332 councillorship seats. This outcome was officially announced by the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, during a press briefing in Osogbo.

The elections proceeded amidst significant controversy. The All Progressives Congress (APC) boycotted the polls, referencing a 10 February Court of Appeal ruling that they interpreted as reinstating previously sacked council officials. Both the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Nigeria Police Force had advised against conducting the elections, suggesting that proceeding could be deemed illegal.

Despite these advisories, the Osun State government maintained that the elections were conducted in full compliance with constitutional provisions and existing laws. Governor Ademola Adeleke commended the peaceful conduct of the electorate and described the process as orderly.

However, the electoral process faced logistical challenges. OSSIEC’s headquarters were reportedly sealed off by police forces on election day, preventing access to essential materials and accreditation tags for journalists. Chairman Abioye expressed regret over the inability to provide accreditation, attributing it to the restricted access imposed by security agencies.

The PDP’s comprehensive victory in these elections underscores the party’s dominant position in Osun State’s local governance. Nonetheless, the controversies surrounding the electoral process have sparked discussions about the legal and political implications of the elections, particularly concerning the legitimacy of the newly elected officials and the potential for future legal challenges.
